County lake

Saturday and Sunday were both beautiful days to be outside. We had several campers and lots of day fishermen. It would help if the fish would cooperate just a little.

Several boat fishermen were out too. They reported catching some wipers, drum, small walleye, and a few crappie. The water temperature is running around 64 degrees.

Gary Richards and son from Valley Center caught a six pound 11 ounce wiper while trolling in their boat. He has a yearly trailer here and fishes almost every weekend. The channel cat continue to be the hottest fish to catch now, using cheese bait, worms, or liver.

We sold lots of shad sides and shad gizzards to the river fishermen. The old saying is, "When the redbuds are blooming it's time to fish for channel cat on the river." Don't know who it was that said that but I've heard it all my life, so get out and go fishing!

The Ducks Unlimited organization of Marion County held a Green Wing event Saturday for kids of Marion County. This was the first one and they are planning for it to be an annual event. There were about 52 children in attendance along with 25 adults.

Activities included an EMT talking about hunting safety, and showing their equipment, (until he got called out on a call). Kansas Dept. of Wildlife and Parks had a laser shoot in the hall. There were seminars on duck calling and duck blind building. Flint Hills Dog trainers were there to show how dogs retrieve ducks. There was clay shooting behind the dam. Raffle prizes were awarded throughout the day and lunch was served. Everyone reported having a good time.

My sister, Virginia Gettinger from Overbrook, came Thursday afternoon and stayed overnight with us. Friday morning she and I drove to Newton and met with Eleanor and Paul Silhan from Salina, and attended the funeral of our first cousin, Lenora McLinden.

Marge and I continue our almost daily trek around the lake, for Walk Kansas. We still haven't made it back to pick up the cans and bottles by U.S.-77, but it's still on our to-do agenda.

Watch out for the Easter bunny this week and have a good fishing week.
