County lake: Hot weather doesn't entice football fans

Another hot week! We did see lightning one evening. The TV said it was east of Emporia. This week is supposed to be cooler, we will see. Just hope we get some RAIN.
I can't get into the football games. Who wants to watch football when it's almost 100 degrees. I sure feel sorry for the guys playing. Football to me is a cool, crisp evening, wearing jeans, sweat shirt, or a jacket. I remember sitting in the stands when it was snowing. Age must be telling on me. Back then they just practiced in September and didn't start playing until almost October.
We had a Cardinal camp-out here this weekend. That is the brand name of a fifth wheel camper. They come here twice a year, once in the fall and again in the spring. There were 23 of them this time. They started moving in on Tuesday, just after Labor Day. While here they visit the surrounding area, seeing the sights and eating out. Because it was so hot, they used the hall almost every afternoon and evening for visiting and playing cards. They had a steak fry Saturday evening and brought two of them for our supper. I didn't have to cook for a change!
Chat and Dine met Saturday evening but I didn't get a chance to talk to anyone about the program.
The Mullers and the Browns used the hall on Sunday.
There weren't many boaters or swimmers out this weekend. I guess everyone went to the state fair or to football games.
We got lots of positive remarks about the fireworks last week. Everyone enjoyed them and told us how pretty they were. Sorry about last week's news. It will be in this week.
(Last week's news)
What a beautiful camping weekend! There were nice, warm days and cool evenings. We had a bigger camping group than over the Fourth of July. Trying to find a table or spot around the lake was getting a little scarce. We still had a few electric spots in the main campground but they were the sunny ones.
Looking at last year's numbers, it was about the same size crowd.
Of course, the only day it was breezy was Sunday — the day to shoot off the fireworks. But it turned out to not be a big problem. They just aimed them out and down a little and it was fine. Wasn't it BEAUTIFUL!!
I locked up early enough to go down by the boat ramp to watch with the grandkids. There were lots of ohhhs and ahhs from everyone down there. Several boats and pontoons were anchored out in the water to watch.
People told us that the traffic going back to Marion was bumper to bumper all the way from Kingfisher's Inn to K-256, WOW!
Thanks to the Marion County Economic Development Council and the county commissioners for the great show. Also, to the team who spends their Sunday afternoon, in the heat, and evening setting them up and shooting them off, a big THANK YOU guys.
We had one event over the weekend that made us all look bad for our community. Our notorious cooler thief was back. He or they, took four coolers from our main campground and three from around the lake. (This all happened between 3 and 4 a.m.) This upsets our campers and us and makes a bad name for our lake. It wasn't bad enough that they stole from us, then scattered the empty beer cans all over the lake afterward. They almost got caught and we have a good idea who you are. Take heed — we don't appreciate thieves living among us. Why don't you get a job and buy your own food and drinks like the rest of us!
Channel cat fishing continues to be good.
A first time camper here from Mulvane caught this 11 pound channel on a big minnow. She really was thrilled.
The bass boat fishermen reported catching several small bass, wipers, and walleye around the lake. A few crappie and channel cat still are being caught at the heated dock.
The Schafers family and Stucky family had reunions in the hall on Saturday, both had big crowds.
We attended the Snelling reunion that was held in the hall on Sunday. The Sandwells used the other half.
A 1977 class reunion used the hall Sunday evening, but I'm not sure where they were from — Tampa or Lincolnville.
With the last big camping weekend over now, maybe I can concentrate on tagging monarchs. When the next cool front comes down, I'll be watching.
