County learns about year-end finances

Marion County Commission met Tuesday for its regular meeting. The courthouse was closed Monday in honor of the Martin Luther King holiday.

As for county finances, total cash for the year ending Dec. 31 was $11,694,914.10 including checking accounts, money market accounts, and CDs.

Interest earned as of March 29, 2002, was $170,927.79.

Taxes collected as of Dec. 31 were $6,895,728.85 for 56 percent.

The county had received 265 protests, and the number of tax receipts the county had collected was 15,565.

During the meeting:

— Commissioner Leroy Wetta said he would like to visit with representatives from Hamms and investigate other sources before deciding where the county would take its trash.

— Commissioners adjourned to a 10-minute executive session to discuss real estate. No action or discussion followed the executive session.

— Commissioners met in a five-minute executive session with Michele Abbott-Becker, communications manager, regarding personnel. No action was taken.

— Commissioners heard from Sheriff Lee Becker who told about a new employee in his office; and heard Kansas Highway Patrol cars would not be available in 2004.

— Commissioners heard from Ron Toews, a member of the Hillsboro Fire Department, who expressed his support for a countywide communication's system.

— Commissioners approved entering into a lease-purchase agreement with the Marion County Fair Association to purchase used bleachers.
