County seniors approve repairs at Lehigh center

Board members of Senior Citizens of Marion County, Inc., approved $200 for plumbing repairs at Lehigh Senior Center.

The board met Feb. 18 at the Florentine Senior Center in Florence with 10 out of 11 county senior centers represented.

Repairs were required as a result of frozen water lines causing 17 water leaks. The funds will cover plumbing supplies, labor, and part of the center's heating bill.

In other business:

— Howard Collett filed a letter of intent to be a silver haired legislator candidate.

— USDA commodities will be available for pickup March 9 by senior center managers. Distribution dates for residents at the centers in the county will be announced.

Future distribution dates for 2005 are May 11, Sept. 14, and Nov. 9.

— Robert Carlton of Central Home Care & Hospice, distributed flyers on volunteer training from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. March 12 and 19.

— Blanche Cowan, chairman of health services provider committee, distributed brochures on ways to make bathrooms safer. She reported 70 percent of home accidents occur in bathrooms.

— Arlene Unruh, chairman of ONE committee, reported its next meeting will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Peabody Senior Center.

— A transportation committee meeting will be at 9 a.m. March 9 at Marion Senior Center, reported Ron Freeman, committee chairman.

— Gary Gooszen, field representative of North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging, announced a seminar called "Your Life, Your Health, Your Meds" will be held from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. April 14 at Marion Senior Center.

Gooszen warned identity theft can be obtained from household trash and suggested items with identifying information be shredded before disposal.

— Virginia Downing reported she and Noreen Weems continue to assist county residents with tax services and utility assistance applications.

— Lanell Hett, secretary and transportation coordinator, reported 10 trips for the month of February, six health related.

A meeting of certified transit district six will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Marion Senior Center. Bret Rowe, newly appointed representative to the district by Kansas Department of Transportation, will attend. The next transportation meeting will be March 9.

— Cowboy poet Ray Davidson entertained the group by reciting cowboy poems.

The next board meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. March 18 at Tampa Senior Center.
