County shares cost for Lincolnville road project
Staff reporter
Marion County will pay for part of an expanded overlay project through Lincolnville.
Marion County Commission approved the request Monday which was made by the City of Lincolnville.
County road superintendent Jim Herzet said the county currently pays for a 24-foot wide overlay through the city but the city wanted the overlay to be wider and cover the road from curb to curb. The previous time the overlay was completed, the city paid $9,000 for the expanded project.
Herzet said the road contractor, Schilling Construction, estimated a cost of $13,000 to mill the current asphalt and lay new or $1,000 per day for three days to simply overlay with asphalt from curb to curb.
The county agreed to pay for the first two days of work at $1,000 per day, and the City of Lincolnville pay for the third day. It also was agreed to allow the city a year's time to pay the amount.
In other business:
— The commission approved a $5,000 payment to United Way in Marion County for a second year to pay for a part-time executive director.
This year's chairman Gordon Mohn of Hillsboro said this would probably be the organization's last year of trying to raise funds. During the past three years, a goal of $60,000 was not met when only $10,000 was raised.
After the 2007 campaign, the organization will reconsider its viability in the county and make a decision about its future.
During the last campaign, $10,000 was awarded by United Way in Marion County to local agencies of American Red Cross, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boy Scouts, Communities in Schools, health ministries, Joyful Noise Pre-School, Main Street Ministries, Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Center, and United Cerebral Palsy.
— The annual contract was approved with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the county sheriff's department to patrol Marion Reservoir. The total contract amount was $22,000 for patrolling from May 1 to Sept. 29. Sheriff Lee Becker said the costs for deputies to patrol was between $12,000 and $13,000 for wages and fuel. Part of the payment will go to the sheriff's fund and the remainder to county general fund.
— The County Seat of Marion submitted a written bid for floor covering in the road and bridge office located in the basement of the courthouse. Option one was for ceramic tile in the entry way of the office and carpet in the remainder of the office for a cost of $1,747. A second bid of $936 was for carpet in the office and no tile.
The commission recommended a bid be sought for a commercial-grade vinyl instead of ceramic tile for the entry way.
— Herzet reported work was being done this week on 30th Road from Timber to Old Mill. Shoulders were being pulled to the middle, the road will be rocked, and then sand will be laid.
Repairs to 370th, the former Roxbury Road, also will be made this week.
