County tax rebate program toughens requirements

Staff reporter

The gloves are off.

Marion County Commission told Marion County Appraiser Cindy Magill to disqualify those participants of the county's neighborhood revitalization program who do not complete the necessary paperwork in a timely manner.

Magill had brought her concerns to the commission a few weeks ago regarding resistance from some property owners who have applied and qualified for a tax rebate but were slow in returning the necessary paperwork or simply failed to respond.

Contact was made with Sumner County, Magill said, and was told that Sumner County sends out certified letters that required a response from participants within 30 days. If the county doesn't receive a response, the participant is disqualified from the program.

For some participants, that could mean a substantial loss of a property tax rebate.

Previous attempt were made by Magill and employees with no other recourse than to take the "you snooze, you lose" approach.

In other business:

— Magill reported that she did not receive the 2008 agriculture values from the state until Feb. 15, so will ask the state for an extension in sending out statements.

She commented that ag values have decreased countywide for the second year in a row.

— Bruce Wells of Flint Hills Resource, Conservation, and Development Area, Inc., presented the annual report.

The district includes counties of Marion, Butler, Chase, Dickinson, Geary, Greenwood, Lyon, Morris, and Wabaunsee.

Goals and objectives also were reviewed.
