CVL 14-year-olds play beyond their years years ago

The CVL 14-year-old baseball team got more than it bargained for this weekend in Wichita.

Playing in what it thought was going to be a 14-and-under tournament but actually a high school tournament, the team won two of its four games.

Coach Mike Jeffrey of Marion said the kids did pretty well for playing out of their age bracket.

"One of the teams had a player 6 foot 6," Jeffrey said. "But we didn't fare too bad."

The boys won their first game against a YMCA team composed of 15-year-olds. After losing the next two, CVL finished off the tournament with a victory over a team of 15- and 16-year-olds.

Jeffrey and his team had some help from Clayton Garnica of Marion and Trevor Johnson of Chase County, who were added just for the weekend tournament.

The original team is looking to play a few more games this summer as well as next year.
