CVL team loses three at Midwest Regionals

The Kansas Champion Cottonwood Valley all-star team lost three straight games in pool play, and were knocked out Aug. 11 at the Midwest Regional Tournament in Wellington.

Defensive lapses and tough opponent pitching were more than the team could overcome.

In game one, the CVL team gave up three runs in the first inning on two walks, two hits, and an error against Colorado, but came back with two runs in the bottom of the same inning to close the margin to one run.

The Colorado team scored a run in the second inning on a wild pitch to extend its lead to two.

The CVL team added one in the third on a sacrifice fly, but the Colorado pitching staff proved too strong, holding the all-stars scoreless the rest of the way. Colorado added a run in the sixth to seal the 5-3 win.

In their second game, the all-stars competed against Sikeston, Mo.

Missouri jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first two innings of play. CVL added a run in the top of the third, but Missouri compiled three more runs, while shutting out the all-stars in the final three innings.

In their third and final game, the all-stars met up with an overpowering Minnesota pitcher, who threw a no-hitter against the CVL team. The hurler struck out nine batters in five innings.

The all-stars fell to Minnesota 10-0.

The CVL team finished 8-6 in post-season play in four tournaments, while grabbing the Kansas state championship.
