Damage, theft reported at Marion schools
Thieves broke in to Marion Middle School sometime between 8 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday.
According to Marion Police Chief Michel Soyez, unknown suspects broke in to the school through a classroom in the middle school. The thieves then gained access to Marion High School through the middle school.
Items stolen from the band room were a stereo system and an electric guitar owned by a student; several cases of Gatorade, boxes of pre-packaged snack items, and a small amount of cash from the cafeteria; and two six-packs of Diet Coke from an office. Also stolen was a fire extinguisher.
A teacher had entered a classroom at 11 a.m. Sunday and noticed the room was "a mess," said Soyez, but the connection of the break-in with the room was not made until Monday morning.
Damage was reported to door frames of four rooms in the high school that were opened by force. Three other rooms in the high school were entered but were unlocked, said Soyez.
Other damage was reported to desks in the office when the suspects tried to pry open drawers.
No cost estimates were available for stolen items and damages.
The crime remains under investigation but some evidence had been located by Monday afternoon.
