Dedication planned at industrial park

Business owners invited to luncheon in honor of Business Appreciation Month

A ribbon-cutting will be held Tuesday to celebrate completion of Phase I of Batt Industrial Park.

In addition, owners of Marion businesses are asked to attend a luncheon following the dedication, in honor of Business Appreciation Month.

Activities will start at 10 a.m. in the large blue and white tent in the business park north of U.S.-56.

Guest speaker is Lt. Gov. Gary Sherrer. Following his remarks, the group will cross the highway to the industrial park entrance for the ribbon-cutting.

The park has new streets and utilities installed by the city. Officials say an industrial area with utilities in place is particularly attractive to new and expanding businesses.

Following the ribbon cutting, a lunch will be served to business owners under the large tent.

Sherrer has served as lieutenant governor since his appointment July 18, 1996. He is the 45th lieutenant governor, and the longest-serving in state history.

He is Secretary of the Kansas Department of Commerce of Housing and vice-chairman of the Governor's Cabinet.

Sherrer served as chairman of the Governor's Vision 21st Century Task Force, where he directed almost 100 Kansans in making recommendations concerning policies and strategies for Kansas in the new millennium.

He serves as chairman of the National Conference of Lieutenant Governors, representing officials in 50 states and five territories.

He founded Leadership Wichita and Leadership Kansas programs and teaches a leadership course at Emporia State University.

Sherrer is a native Kansan. He graduated from Topeka High School and ESU. He taught in public high schools but spent the majority of his career in the financial industry.

He has been named Distinguished Alumni and received the Award of Excellence from ESU. He was selected for the national Henry Toll Fellowship Program in 1999. In 2000, he received the Carl Perkins Humanitarian Award in recognition of his contributions to the improvement, promotion, development, and progress of career and technical education.
