Dee Martin

Dee D. Martin, 80, of Herington, died Dec. 30, 2003, at Council Grove Health Care Center.

Born Feb. 12, 1923, in Wagner, Okla., he was the son of William J. and Matie (Rain) Martin.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as a technician fifth grade and received a combat infantryman badge and two Bronze Stars in the Rhineland and Central Europe.

He was a heavy equipment operator at Fort Riley for many years until his retirement on Sept. 1, 1989. He also assisted at the Vogt Standard Station and Tim's Service Station following his retirement.

During his spare time, he was an avid sports fan.

He was preceded in death by his second wife, Evelyn in 1990; his third wife, Wilma in 1995; a sister, Jettie Fields; five brothers, Leonard, Grant, Ted, Paris, and Troy; and his parents.

Survivors include three sons, Tim Martin of Burlington, and Brad Martin and Steve Martin of Council Grove; two daughters, Dee Ann VanFossen of Pennsylvania and Marian Henry of Randolph; a sister, Della Weeks of Arkansas City; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday morning with the Rev. Gary L. Schrader officiating. Burial was in Sunset Hill Cemetery with full military honors.

A memorial fund has been established with the Herington Recreation Commission.
