Dilapidated house may be demolished

Building permit fees increase

Marion City Council will hold a public hearing at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 25 to address a dilapidated structure at 201 N. Freeborn, Marion.

Following the hearing, the council will determine if the house needs to be removed.

The council also approved two ordinances — one for licensing contractors and one that increases building permit fees.

All contractors will be required to purchase a city license Jan. 1 of each year for $25. The license would have to be presented to the city building inspector prior to receiving a city building permit.

If the building inspector finds probable cause that the contractor is violating city ordinances, the license can be suspended for 30 days.

Contractors also will be required to have a minimum of $250,000 insurance policy.

These rules do not apply to those homeowners who are making repairs or improvements.

Building permit fees will be 15 cents per square foot for commercial construction and 10 cents per square foot for residential. The fee will be assessed on the square footage of the foundation.

A $25 per project fee will be charged for the moving of a building from one lot to another or within the same lot, demolition of a building, construction or alteration of an accessory building between 121 and 300 square feet, or to construct a carport.

The permit fee to construct an accessory building more than 300 square feet is 10 cents per square foot.
