District reorganizes for new year

Marion-Florence USD 408 board of education made its annual appointments for the 2002-2003 year Monday at its regular monthly meeting.

Member Rex Savage was named board president for the sixth time and fifth year in a row. Gene Bowers was elected vice president.

Susan Robson was named to the district school improvement team. Roger Hannaford III was appointed to the interactive video classroom board.

Doug Sharp was named special education representative with Keith Collett as alternate. Collett has served on the special education board for five years. Members thanked him for his service, which saw the special education cooperative make numerous changes.

Other appointments included: board clerk, Martin Tice; board treasurer, Becky Summerville; board attorney, Chris Costello; official newspaper, Marion County Record; district financial institution, Central National Bank; meeting times, 7 p.m., second Monday of the month; attendance officers, Marion Elementary School, Stan Ploutz; Marion Middle School, Tod Gordon; Marion High School, Ken Arnhold; food service representative, Rhonda Hett; hearing officer for free and reduced meals, Gerald Henderson; suspension and expulsion hearing officer, Henderson; KPERS representatives, Martin Tice, Becky Summerville; Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Martin Tice; purchasing agents, Martin Tice, Gerald Henderson.

School calendar — 1,116 hours to be accumulated during 186 days of school.

Fees — Kindergarten, $14; Grades 1-12, $30; yearbook, $40. Fees go to supplement textbook and workbook costs. In addition to the yearbook fee, the district pays between $4,000 to $5,000 to supplement yearbook costs. In response to questions from the board, officials said the only ways to reduce yearbook costs were to produce a smaller book with no color pages.

Meal prices — Breakfast, $1.10 K-6, $1.35 7-12, $2.25 adults, 30 cents for all students eligible for reduced cost meals. Lunch, $1.60 K-6, $1.85 7-12, $2.75 adult, 40 cents reduced cost.

Activity funds — Building principals as supervisor, building secretaries as bookkeepers.

Petty cash amounts — MES, $500; MMS, $1,500; MHS, $750; clerk of the board, $750.
