Dog wash to benefit county's drug dogs

The third annual Marion County Dog Wash will be from 9 a.m. to noon this Saturday at the Animal Health Center, 119 South Coble in Marion.

All proceeds will go to the Marion County Drug Dog Fund. A $5 donation per dog is requested.

The funds will help to pay for food and medications provided by the Animal Health Center for the dogs.

Last year, 20 to 25 dogs were brought in for their owners for "cleanup," and Dr. Jessica Laurin of the AHC hopes there will be more this year.

Dogs will receive a flea bath with flea shampoo, and will be rinsed off. No electric dryers will be used.

The drug dogs' food and medicine costs about $300 per dog per year, Laurin estimated. Jag, the Marion County Sheriff's dog, and Rico, from the Hillsboro Police Department, are cared for at the AHC.

Atos, a Kansas Highway Patrol dog, also lives in Marion County, but is not cared for at the clinic.

The recent Top Dog contest raised a little more than $100 for the fund.

Sometime Saturday morning, there will be a demonstration of what the drug dogs do, Laurin said.
