Author Don Coldsmith will speak on the topic, "It Happened Here — Kansas and the Civil War," at 7 p.m. April 15 at Marion City Library.
His program will address Kansas' pivotal role in the battle to preserve the union. He will tackle questions including: Which state suffered the first Civil War casualities, attracted the most feared terrorists of both North and South, and cast the vote that saved Andrew Johnson from impeachment?

He graduated from Baker University in 1949 and earned his doctorate in medicine in 1958 from the University of Kansas. He served as a family practice physician in Emporia until 1988.
Coldsmith and his wife, Edna, also operate a small ranching operation where they raise cattle and Appaloosa horses. The couple has five daughters.
