Ed Sandwell was there

Representing Aulne, the community of his youth, and Marion, the town where he was educated, Ed Sandwell also represented the United States of America on Omaha Beach in Normandy during June of '44.

Ed and thousands like him "were there." They "went in" on D-Day and 60-plus years later are respected and admired, not because others know what they did — no one can fully understand — but because they "were there."

He was part of that World War II generation, the "young guys back from the war," who returned to civilian life in the late 40s. Ed purchased the Sanitary Market from the late "Butch" Jarvis (a WWI veteran) and operated it successfully for 20 years until he took a position with the Corps of Engineers at the newly constructed Marion Reservoir.

He was a community booster, well liked, and part of the everyday social life of the bustling community.

Unfortunately time takes its toll and Ed is gone. However, the world is a better place because he "was there" when it counted.
