Edna Vajnar

Edna Vajnar, 92, died Feb. 4, 2004, at Hillsboro.

The daughter of Reinhardt and Julia (Nuss) Schmidt, she was born Jan. 26, 1912, on a farm near Durham. She was one of eight children.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church at Durham. In 1929 the family moved to Tampa. She worked for several different families, in a restaurant, and grocery store.

In 1939 she married Joseph Vajnar. They operated a restaurant in Tampa for several years, then bought a farm south of Tampa.

She was a member of LWML and was a willing volunteer until her husband had a stroke and she became his caretaker.

On March 1, 1998, she fell and broke a hip, then had a stroke. She was in a nursing home since that time.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Esther, Ruth, Ida, and Frieda; and two brothers, Harry and Reinhardt.

Survivors include her sons, Robert and Warren; a sister, Evelyn Hensley of Winfield; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning at St. John's Lutheran Church, Tampa, with the Rev. Clark Davis officiating.

Congregational hymns were "I'm But A Stranger Here," "Asleep in Jesus," and "How Great Thou Art." Betty Mueller was organist.

Casket bearers were Wilbert Backhus, Herb Backhus, Paul Backhus, Raymond Bielefeld, Myron Klein, and David Mueller.

Burial was in Tampa Lutheran Cemetery, Tampa.

Memorial funds have been established with the church and Hillsboro Community Medical Center.
