Elgin building sells, exciting plans unfold
Jim Strawn of Hutchinson has sold Elgin House Apartments at 115 N. Third Street, Marion.
The facility was purchased by Jim and Nancy Cloutier of Hillsboro, who plan to renovate the building and reopen different businesses in the facility.
The first floor will be converted back to a restaurant reminiscent of the original design. Included with the restaurant will be a lounge, billiards room, conference room for private meetings, and area for receptions.
"My idea is to turn it back to be as original as possible," said Cloutier.
Plans also include converting the second floor to a bed and breakfast, and the third floor to corporate offices for Diversified Energy Management, the parent company to Shawmar Oil Company and Cardie Oil Company.
Some areas will be left for future development or will be leased.
Strawn and wife Jackie purchased the historic landmark in 2000 when the building was auctioned.
Strawn, a Hutchinson contractor, said most of his recent efforts have been on land development, which has not left much time for him to concentrate on the Elgin building.
Since the purchase by the Strawns, apartments were renovated, and bed and breakfast apartments were available.
Currently there are 13-14 tenants, said Strawn, who will have to be relocated.
"I feel bad about moving out my tenants but the end result will be a tremendous benefit to Marion," said Strawn.
A love for history and preservation motivated the Strawns to purchase the 100-year-old building.
"When I was looking for a buyer for the Elgin, I wanted to make sure it would be someone who would preserve its historic value," Strawn said, "and I am confident Jim (Cloutier) will do that."
Closing will be mid-October or sooner. Renovations will begin after closing, said Cloutier.
Photos sought
by new owner
Old photographs of the Elgin Hotel are being sought by Jim Cloutier.
Cloutier has purchased the local landmark and wants to convert the building back to its original Victorian style.
He particularly is looking for photographs of the interior of the building that might include the front desk and restaurant.
Anyone with photographs or information, should contact Cloutier at (620) 382-2932.
