Elizabeth Brodhead
Elizabeth Brodhead, 92, died Feb. 4, 2002.
Born Aug. 26, 1909, at Barrington, Ill., she was the only child of Leroy and Maud (Harris) Gaston.
The family moved to Philadelphia, Pa., when her father's Army service ended. She graduated from Upper Darby High School and attended the University of Pennsylvania where she was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi social sorority. She graduated from Kansas State University in 1932 with a degree in journalism and was a member of Theta Sigma Phi honorary sorority for women in journalism.
She was a member of P.E.O. and Democratic Women's Club and attended the Presbyterian church.
After her marriage in June 1932 to Richard Brodhead they lived in Abilene until 1938 when they moved to Marion.
When all but one child had left home, Elizabeth became a social worker for the county welfare department, later going to the state welfare department as a quality control reviewer.
She retired to care for her ill husband who preceded her in death in 1976.
Survivors include two sons, Daniel of Dallas, Texas, and Michael of Reno, Nev.; two daughters, Karen Powell of Tucson, Ariz., and Molly Buck of Salina; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at Marion Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Larry Valentine and Brad Hansen officiating.
Laura Williams provided organ music.
Casket bearers were Bob Brookens, John Brose, David Ruder, Leo Blackman, Dick Varenhorst, and James Weir. Honorary casket bearers were Jerry Brose and James Dean.
Burial was in Marion Cemetery.
A memorial fund has been established with St. Luke Hospital.
