Eric Meyer promoted at University of Illinois

Eric Meyer, son of Bill and Joan Meyer of Marion and co-owner of this newspaper, was promoted Friday to associate professor of journalism at the University of Illinois and was granted indefinite tenure.

Meyer joined the U of I journalism faculty in 1996 after a 17-year career as an editor on the news, photo, and graphic desks at the Milwaukee Journal. He also is founder and managing partner of NewsLink Associates, which publishes http://newslink.org and provides consulting services to newspapers. He had been an assistant professor.

Indefinite tenure is not an automatic process at major research universities. Departments and colleges are expected to be very selective and recommend only faculty members shown to have national or international stature in their field and to be leading scholars and teachers, creative artists, or providers of public service. Promotion and tenure decisions are reviewed at multiple levels within the university in a process that requires most of a year.
