Estimates divulged for Sunflower improvements

A cost estimate from engineer consultants for improvements to Sunflower Road was acknowledged May 31 by Marion County Commission.

Kirkham and Michael Engineers provided a cost estimate of $633,170. The county had received $450,000 from Kansas Department of Transportation, with $18,000 already used from those funds.

The commission will discuss options at future meetings.

In other business:

— A contract was approved for the design of two bridges. Cook, Flatt, and Strobel will receive a total of $46,600.

— A lease was signed for three new Caterpillar motor graders.

— Salary was approved for Mark Koehn as a rural patrolman in Lehigh Township. Also two summer helpers were hired by road and bridge department — Preston Williams and Jeremy Vondenkamp.

— Transfer station manager Rollin Schmidt requested and received a five-minute executive session to discuss personnel. When the meeting reconvened, the commission approved a $1 per hour pay increase for transfer station employee Dan Sleznick. He will receive an additional pay increase when he obtains a CDL.
