Eugene Jirak

Eugene "Gene" Jirak, 68, of Stuart, Iowa, died May 2, 2004, at Des Moines, Iowa.

Born Sept. 17, 1935, at Hillsboro, he was the son of Harvey and Theresa (Neuwirth) Jirak.

The family moved to Stuart, Iowa, when he was four years old. He attended Stuart schools and in 1954, enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during the Korean conflict.

He owned and operated Jirak Plumbing of Stuart for more than 40 years.

He was a member of All Saints Church and the Knights of Columbus and James C. McGhee American Legion Post. An avid fisherman, he also enjoyed gardening and traveling.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Leo Jirak; and two sisters, Margaret Frick and Rosemarie Calaway.

Survivors include his wife, Alberta of Stuart, Iowa; a son, Douglas Jirak of Stuart, Iowa; a daughter, Deborah Schirm of Dexter, Iowa; two stepsons, Chris Egger of Dexter, Iowa, and Mike Egger of Des Moines, Iowa; a stepdaughter, Pam Egger of Van Meter, Iowa; two sisters, Janeann Barnett of Morris, Ill., and Rosalie McGinnis of Stuart, Iowa; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

A Mass of Christian burial was held Thursday morning at All Saints Catholic Church, Stuart, Iowa, with Father David Fleming and Father John Jirak as concelebrants.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Stuart, Iowa.
