Everything greening up in Youngtown

The rain was wonderful and everything is greening up, even the yards. I had gotten to where I wasn't mowing at all and I had to mow the entire yard last week and will again this week. Leonard Klassen mowed my pasture and it is greening up nicely. I'm sure everyone out here is glad to have K-150 open and free of barricades. I was so used to dodging the barricades, that at first I almost would go to the center of the road at intersections even after the road was open.

Dorothy Hayen called to tell me that Amy Goering is helping her Tuesday evenings following her day at Marion High School. Dorothy enjoys having her help and reports she does a great job. Leonard Klassen gave Brent Hayen a windmill. Brent and John have taken it down and soon will be putting it up on Brent's place. Johnny Umberger brought tomatoes to John and Dorothy again last week and they shared them with other family members.

Kristine Bateman of Topeka was home last weekend. She and Jeannine spent time in Newton with Alvina Skibbe.

Kathy and Paul Swan and Vicki Smolik drove to Emporia Friday and helped Justin and Kratina Griffin, Kandace and Kassidy with a garage sale Friday and Saturday.

Clint and Diana Jost stopped Sunday evening on their way home from the state fair to visit with Cy and L.Dena Goertz.

Betsy Bunnel and Bev Jennison picked up Shirley Bowers Labor Day weekend and took her to Newton where they had lunch with Janelle Paden, then drove to the home of MaryLou and Rick Just and Kyle where they spent the weekend. Additional Sunday noon dinner guests were Russell and Stephanie Bowers from Colby.

Shirley and David Bowers, Hope and Jack Spain, and Margaret Ireland were at the covered dish dinner Friday night opening the three-day Mission Festival at Eastmoor United Methodist Church. Mary Beth Bowers and Luke, Shirley and David Bowers, and Margaret Ireland attended the Saturday night session where we heard a missionary from Russia talk.

Mary Beth Bowers was in Missouri Wednesday to Friday of last week visiting her sister Karen Kelly following major surgery. Mary Beth took in several antique stores on the way home.

Howard and Beth Collett attended Grandparents' Day at Marion Elementary School for fourth grader Caroline, daughter of Keith and Ann Collett. They watched Hank Collett play football Thursday afternoon with the Marion Middle School. Howard and Beth Collett met Iris and Jay Lawrence in El Dorado Sunday and ate lunch together. The Colletts called on Romona Clanton Sunday for an afternoon of visiting.

Patty and Roseva McLinden went to Kansas City to visit Craig and Susie Morton and tour their new home. They also watched Regan and Jordan play soccer. On the way home, they stopped in Emporia and attended the 50th birthday party for Roseva's niece, Cheryl Smith.

Faye and Jerry Makovec drove to Baldwin City last weekend to stay with Chelsea and Brian Turk while their parents were on a little trip. Delores Stroda called on Faye Monday evening and Dwayne Stroda joined them after his seed meeting was finished. Jerry and Faye attended the Kansas State Fair on Saturday. She said it was crowded, but they enjoyed it and the lovely weather they had that day. She reported there are a lot of new things this year.

Dean and Bettie Batt visited Leonard and Rosalie Klassen Friday night. Leonard and Rosalie had dinner with Burt and Alice Jost and Dorothy and Allen Pankratz at Florence on Sunday.

Jackie Hett was in Wichita Sunday at the surprise 18th birthday party honoring Lauren Helmer, daughter of Melinda and Ken Helmer.
