Fair is this week at county fairgrounds

The Marion County Fair will "Celebrate Good Times" beginning today (Wednesday) at the fairgrounds at Hillsboro.

Open class and 4-H entries were checked in and judged today. Public viewing began after 3 p.m.

The traditional fair parade will be at 6:30 p.m., downtown Hillsboro.

After the parade, the popular Women's Ranch Rodeo competition will begin at 7:15 p.m. in the arena. Sponsored by Sprint, tickets are $3 for adults, 12 and under get in free.

At 7:30 p.m., area high school bands will perform at the fairgrounds.

From 7:30 to 9 p.m., Emprise Bank will sponsor a watermelon feed outside the pavilion.

A 4-H sheep and market goat show will be held at 7:30 p.m. along with the commissioners' cookie jar.

At 9 p.m., there will be birthday party to celebrate the 100th birthday of 4-H. Cake and punch will be served.

On Thursday, a dairy goat show will begin at 9 a.m., followed by a dairy cattle show at 1 p.m.

A singles horseshoe pitching tournament will be held at 7 p.m.

Also at 7 p.m., there will be a bucket calf and beef show.

After the beef show, the Kraft Rodeo will begin in the arena. Tickets are available in advance or at the gate.

During the rodeo, there will be mutton bustin', mini bull riding, and calf scramble for those 12 years old and younger.

The Rod Jost Band will perform at 9 p.m. on the east patio of the Scout House.

On Friday, a swine show will begin at 9 a.m.

An exhibition will be presented at 6:30 p.m. by the Fort Riley commanding general's mounted color guard. It will be held in the arena and admission is free.

Hard work will pay off for livestock exhibitors when the annual 4-H livestock premium sale will be held at 6:30 p.m.

At 8 p.m., The Kraft Rodeo and events for children will begin at 8 p.m.

Airplane rides will be available beginning from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Hillsboro Airport. The rides are free for those ages seven through 18. Parental permission is required.

At 10 a.m., a 4-H round robin event will be followed by a performance by students of Vicky's School of Dance at 11 a.m.

An FFA petting zoo will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Mary Beth Bowers will present a puppet show at 1:15 p.m.

At 2 p.m., 4-Hers will model sewing and knitting projects during the 4-H style review. A 4-H awards celebration will begin at 3 p.m.

Children up to 12 years of age will enjoy the Van De Creek pedal pull, sponsored by Jerry Cady Agency and Deer Trail Implement, Inc., both of Marion.

A new feature, the barbecue showcase, will begin at 4 p.m. Fair-goers will have the opportunity to sample various barbecued foods made by local residents and businesses.

At 6:30 p.m., a 4-H rocket launch will be held in the arena.

Tickets are available for the annual demolition derby which will begin at 7 p.m. in the arena.

Exhibit removal and pay-out of premiums will be from 5 to 6 p.m.

Exhibits will be open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily for public viewing.

National Guard football toss will be held daily from 4 to 10 p.m.

The commercial building will be open from 5 to 10 p.m. daily, and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday. Dining in the foods building will be available from 4 to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and noon to 6 p.m. Saturday.

Cole's Sun and Fun Carnival will be open from 4 p.m. to closing of events on the fairgrounds. Wrist band day is Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. Unlimited rides for $10.
