Fall into a new habit

With one month remaining before the kickoff of Fall sports, things around the office have become a little more hectic. Add into that equation our latest endeavor with the 100 top athletes in Marion County history and you have shear chaos.

But I this is what I get geared up for every year.

There's truly an ambiance that goes along with the smell of pigskin, sweaty gyms, and cool Friday nights at the start of each school year.

Teachers, students, athletes, and parents have all had some time to step away from school activities for a couple of months and hopefully recharge their batteries. It's a great time.

Fall also can be a time of new beginnings and a time to establish year-long goals, whether you're a student, a teacher, a parent, or just someone looking for a change. I've already set a goal for myself for the upcoming year. I'm going to lose 20 pounds before I'm done student teaching. Not an impossible goal, but certainly for me VERY difficult.

George McFly (from "Back to the Future" fame) might have said it best when he said, "You can do anything if you put your mind to it." Well, it's a good saying, but realistic, I think not. You can't always do everything you want even if you set your mind to it. But if you do the very best you can and strive to fulfill your goal, some good things can come to pass.

With that said, I want to challenge athletes, students, parents, teachers, and others out there, who may be thinking about setting a goal that may or may not be attainable.

Give it a shot. Better yet, set a goal and strive to succeed, because trying to reach a goal and reaching a goal are two entirely different things. Push yourself and be ready for setbacks, but don't quit when it gets tough, and use fall to "spring" you to your goals.
