Farmers Grain to vote on merger

Stockholders of Farmers Grain Cooperative, headquartered in Walton, will vote Thursday on merging with Mid-Kansas Cooperative headquartered at Moundridge.

Members met Tuesday to vote on merger issues. The final vote will be taken at 7 p.m. Thursday at Newton High School. A 2/3 majority is required to approve the merger.

Elevators at Peabody, Burns, and Newton are members of Farmers Grain.

The merged cooperative will serve nine counties with 28 locations. Farmers Grain has nine and Mid-Kansas 19.

With approval expected Thursday, the merger will be effective May 1.

It is anticipated that Bob Nattier, general manager, will continue in that role of the expanded Mid-Kansas operation with headquarters in Moundridge.

Dave Studebaker, manager of Farmers Grain, said the merger will be a "win-win" for both present cooperatives. He said it will "provide a stable work force of the present nine FGC's nine locations."
