FCCLA Iraq charity drive will collect gifts at homecoming

The Marion High School chapter of Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) will be accepting donations of items Friday at the Marion-Lyons basketball game to be sent to Iraq.

FCCLA is participating in "Operation Ruby Slippers," a statewide humanitarian assistance drive sponsored by Kansas Army National Guard and Kansas Redlegs.

A collection box supervised by FCCLA members will be available at the main gymnasium entrance, according to Myrta Billings, FCCLA sponsor.

Over-the-counter medications are in demand. Aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, antacids, anti-diarrhea, anti-nausea, laxatives, fiber supplements, arthritis cream, and muscle pain relief cream are needed.

Medications for children also will be accepted, including baby aspirin, children's Tylenol, diaper rash ointment, infant suppositories, cold and allergy medication, anti-gas formulations, and baby sun block.

Multivitamins for all ages may be donated. If donating children's multivitamins, donors should not give Flintstones vitamins.

Shoes for young children are in high demand, as are clothes for all ages.

One facet of Operation Ruby Slippers is "Operation Every Child Gets Ahead," which specifically targets donations of school supplies. Paper, pencils, erasers, watercolors, dry erase markers, chalk, and soccer equipment may be donated.

Individuals with questions regarding donations should contact Myrta Billings, 382-2168.
