Final bid approved for bathrooms at complex

Council meeting time to change to 4 p.m.

Staff reporter

Marion City Council approved an updated bid Monday evening from Brad Seacat for new bathroom facilities at the sports complex.

Seacat explained to the council that discussion was held regarding trying to reuse a concrete pad for the new structure but officials determined that it would be best to remove the slab and start fresh.

Councilman Stacey Collett asked if the bathrooms could be relocated and keep the slab where it is. City officials responded that the bathroom facility needed to be where the slab was to hook up to the sewer system.

The question was asked regarding the necessity of having heaters in the bathrooms. Seacat said the complex is opened in March which still has freezing temperatures. The heaters will keep the plumbing from freezing and accommodate patrons.

The total project is expected to be $20,947.

In other business:

— By a vote of 3-2, the council approved an ordinance to change the council's meeting time from 5:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. which will begin at the next council meeting, March 24. Collett and mayor Mary Olson voted against the ordinance.

— The council approved the renewal of property tax exemptions for Marion Die & Fixture. City clerk Angela Lange reported that she and Olson reviewed the renewal application but did not contact the business.

The council also approved a new tax exemption for Mid-America Custom Countertops. Olson said owner Brad Cady was "working on" getting new employees.

— A payment of $24,940 was approved to Hett Construction for the construction of a building for Arlie's Inc. at the city's industrial park.

— Olson read a proclamation that designated March 9-15 as Girl Scout Week.

— City administrator David Mayfield reported that he had met with the interview committee regarding the economic development director's position. A total of 14 applications were received with eight applicants willing to be interviewed. Applicants will be interviewed March 26 and 27.

— City and school officials met this past week to discuss spray features for the new swimming pool. Bids will be obtained and presented to the council at a later date.

— The council approved the following appointments to the city's park board: Janice Case, a four-year term; Pam Bowers, three years; Dave Hett, three years; Dale Johnson, two years; and Bonnie Vinduska, two years.

— The snow removal ordinance was not approved because Olson said it seemed to be more for an emergency snow route. Collett said the policy needed to be updated, not the ordinance.
