Final-game victory gives MHS fifth-place

In the final year of having just six teams in the Trojan Classic, the Marion High School Warrior girls' basketball team took fifth-place with a 48-42 victory Saturday against Cair Paravel-Topeka Lions.
Toni Gordon scored a game-high 20 points, and snared nine rebounds. She scored 26 points in a first-round loss to Belleville, and averaged 19.7 points and eight rebounds during the three-game tournament.
In the fifth-place game the Warriors had five girls play at least 25 minutes, and had only seven see action during the victory.
Injuries have forced Warrior starters to stay on the court almost the entire game.
Point guard Megan Hudson was out of the lineup for the second straight game with a knee injury. Eric Geis started in her place and had two rebounds and three steals.
Allie Maddox helped out Gordon with 13 points on just 2-9 shooting. But she did nail 8-11 free throws and grab 12 rebounds.
Gordon had been averaging close to 15 points and four rebounds before the tournament. It was the second straight year she starred for MHS in the Trojan Classic after averaging 12 points and six rebounds in last year's tournament.
The Warriors (0-3, 4-8) will look for their first league victory of the season Friday when they travel back to Hillsboro to take on the Trojans.
Hillsboro is coming off a third-place finish in the Trojan Classic. Game time is set for around 7 p.m.
