Fire safety winners named at MES
Twenty-one students attending Marion Elementary School received smoke detectors or monetary rewards for posters they made regarding fire safety for Fire Prevention Week.
Representatives from the Marion Fire Department made the announcement during an all school presentation Thursday in front of the school.
The winners are listed below by grade:
Kindergarten — First, Courtney Williams; second, Erika Hess; third, McKenzee Remmers.
First grade — First, Hailey Watson; second, Samantha Davies; third, Andrew Hampton.
Second grade — First, Kaelyn Thierolf, second, Brittany Swan; third, Clint Kroupa.
Third grade — First, Monica Spachek; second, Emily Cyr; third, Chelsea Voth.
Fourth grade — First, Lexie Kruse; second, Samantha Eickleberry; third, Andi Marshall.
Fifth grade — First, Kayla Williams; second, Raelene Allen; third, Chassidy Carlson.
Sixth grade — First, Lindsey Maytum; second, Anna Laurin; third, Adam Hett.
Earlier, students watched Marion firemen demonstrate how they roll out the hoses and the protection gear they wear to fight fires.
Students also participated in a fire drill where they evacuated the building and took shelter at Eastmoor United Methodist Church.
MES students this month are collecting pennies to see how much money they can raise for the Marion and Florence fire departments. During Thurday's assembly, Marion firefighters took turns emptying the four fire boots filled with loose change.
Students will continue to collect change through the end of the month.
