Florence Hotel of 1871 featured on calendar cover years ago

The Florence community birthday and activity calendars have arrived and are available for sale, members of the Florence Historical Society learned during their Nov. 18 meeting.

The cover photo features the Florence Hotel, established in 1871 by J.A. Pike. It was located on the northwest corner of Fifth and Main streets.

Calendars cost $5 apiece and can be purchased by contacting Neva Robinson.

It was announced that an unknown individual left an antique rotary iron on the front porch of the Harvey House. Historical society members would like to thank the person if they knew who donated it.

The Harvey House will be closed in January and February for cleaning and redecorating.

The Society newsletter will be mailed the first week of December. The group voted to sell the book, "Growing Up in Florence, Kansas" by the late William Stamp who wrote of his childhood in Florence. Stamp died Nov. 13 in Mission Viejo, Calif. Proceeds from the sale of the book will benefit the museum.

Those attending the meeting were Sarah Cope, Harvey Wells, Nancy Moore, Mary Jane Grimmett, Marjorie Jackson, Mary Lou Schaffer, Neva Robinson, Twilah Williams and Judy Mills.
