Fourth of July is expensive

In spite of the AAA news release stating that the price of gasoline is 24 cents a gallon lower than a year ago, one wonders what the true cost of an Independence Day holiday might be — adjusted for inflation

This won't be a three-day weekend holiday, so the price could be higher. However, the cost of a Thursday-only celebration is shocking. No modern American would consider staying at home, raising Old Glory and watching a patriotic program. Of course not, they'll be going to the lake, movie, or other attraction whether they can afford it or not.

If you consider that young people with children are the major observers of the holiday — well, the price begins to be intolerable.

Gasoline, soda pop, hamburgers, and other such necessary items are costly. One wonders how young folks with children, automobiles, and a penchant for "going places" can afford that lifestyle.

Mom and Pop both work. That's how.

Back during the days when a pack of Lady Fingers was a penny and full size fire crackers cost a nickel a package, the holiday was more tolerable to the pocket book.

Back then, the public was told that fireworks were cheap because the Chinese worked for pennies a day. Today they drive automobiles, watch TV, and have cell phones.

Holidays are expensive.-
