Fred Shields

Fred M. Shields, 85, a lifelong resident of Lincolnville, died June 9, 2004, at Salina Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 24, 1918, at Lincolnville, he was the son of Martin and Augusta (Barre) Shields.

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at St. John's Lutheran Church, Lincolnville, with Pastor Alan Stahlecker officiating.

Burial was in Lewis Cemetery, Ramona.

He was a 1935 graduate of Lincolnville High School.

On April 24, 1944, he married Virginia Brunner at Ramona.

A retired farmer and stockman, he had raised polled Hereford cattle since 1944.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and served as president and secretary of the church board. He was a member of the school board, an officer in the local co-op, supervisor on the Marion County Agriculture Board, Marion County Farm Bureau, Marion County Extension Council, and Middle Creek Watershed. He was a 4-H leader of Lincolnville Wide-Awake 4-H Club and served on the Lamp Lighters' AAL board.

He was preceded in death by a son, Carroll Shields in 2003; a brother, Ivan Shields; and his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia; two sons, Kenny Shields of Lincolnville and Glenn Shields and wife, Marcia, of Big Rock, Ill.; a brother, Emerson Shields of St. John; a daughter-in-law, Kim Shields of Lincolnville; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established with St. John's Lutheran Church, Lincolnville.
