From the sidelines
— What a weekend it was for Marion High School basketball.
Two big victories for the girls, and two near buzzer-beaters for the boys, although they did end up on the losing end of one of them.
MHS plays its next five games at either Marion or Hillsboro
— The Warrior wrestling team should be applauded for winning both its duals Thursday after an 18-day layoff.
They now wrestle four times in the next eight days.
— Watching the Jayhawks play in the Orange Bowl was surreal, considering I remember games when I was a student just a few years back where the atmosphere reminded me more of a chess match than a football game.
And the fact they beat Virginia Tech (one of my least favorite teams since I was five years old) at its own game was great.
Congrats on a great season 'Hawks.
— Besides wining the game, one of the best things to come out of the victory, are the excuses Missouri fans are making.
They probably should have been there instead of KU, but that's not what happened and no one will remember that.
But hey, Mizzou, the Cotton Bowl is great, I mean if you don't like playing in BCS bowls.
— Is anyone else starting to get peeved about the writer's strike?
I really miss "The Big Bang Theory." Although, I'm pretty sure I'm the only one.
— The crowds at the basketball games Friday and Saturday were strong considering the teams played two nights in a row.
It would be nice if everyone there showed up next week for the Hillsboro tournament, and Jan. 25 for a league game against the Trojans.
The first week of March will guarantee MHS to play its fifth game at Hillsboro as the Trojans host a 3A sub-state tournament.
— Why is it that officials are able to run off the court right when a game is over?
I realize they don't want to get hit with anything because of a bad call, but come on.
When a team loses a game on a last second shot, they are expected to head right over to the other team and tell them "good game," when really they didn't think it was a good game at all.
I think the faster referees run off the court, the more they realize they called a bad game.
— Not to look too far ahead, but the Jayhawk basketball team has a good chance to be 20-0 when it heads into a Jan. 30 game at Manhattan.
The Wildcat crowd will be crazier than ever to try and end the streak of losses at Bramlage Coliseum.
That means it should be a fun game to attend.
Too bad the cheapest tickets I saw online were $135 each.
— Here's to hoping the rest of 2008 is as fun for Marion sports as the first week has been.
