From the sidelines

As I head to my fourth straight state track meet this weekend, (not in competition of course because that would require I jump or run well) I am praying for nice weather.

The meet is two days of grueling heat, tough competition, and standing on your feet longer than waiting in line at Starbucks.

And that's just for the photographers.

After Saturday's events the first year I went, the left side of my face looked like a tomato, while the right side was as white as a golf ball.

Not very attractive, let me tell you.

Last year it rained so long, it made the 3200-meter run seem short.

So this year, how about 75 degrees and a light breeze?

However, the forecast is calling for a high of 80 with thunderstorms Friday, and Saturday is supposed to be 83 with more thunderstorms.

Humidity, here we come.

It kind of sounds like the perfect day, only opposite.

Of course, we have two more days until it starts, which in Kansas could mean the temperature will go up or drop 20 degrees, and the weatherman still gets paid.

But even with bad weather, there always seems to be good competition.

From 1-6A each school has the best of the best out on the track and field, and the athletes usually don't disappoint.

Marion will have its share of non-disappointers this weekend, with a total of 14 athletes competing in individual and relay events.

There has been quite a few blue and red clad Warriors at the meet the past few years, and 2008 is no different.

I can't sit here and say, "Even if you have no affiliation with an athlete or the school, spend your weekend at the state track meet."

I might as well say, "find a $100 bill and burn it."

It ain't gonna happen.

But if you do happen to be in Wichita this weekend, and enjoy sports, it would be worth the money to go watch some of the best athletes in the state compete against each other.

Wichita State University has been playing host to the event for more than 30 years, and it knows how to run a smooth track and field event.

For the most part the event is a well-oiled machine with athletes who can be described the same way.

So, pack your sunscreen, grab your binoculars, and head to Wichita and watch some athletes in action.

It's much more fun that burning a $100 bill.
