Frosty's cousin stands guard at Copper Shed

It's been a tradition at The Copper Shed to create a special outdoor attraction every Christmas.

This year owners Dwight and Julie Nelson decided to make a "snowman" out of old barbed wire and other metal junk.

"Frosty couldn't make it this year, so we had to go with his cousin," Dwight said laughing.

Rusty the Snowman can be seen by passers-by as he stands guard west of the store at 1832 140th, Marion.

His body is comprised of two large rolls of old fencing which had to be dug out of the brush, and is topped with a head especially formed for the occasion.

The heavy rolls of wire had to be moved into place using a tractor and big bale carrier. They are anchored around a steel post which runs through the center.

The nose, mouth, and pipe were made from scrap iron. The eyes are old gas caps, buttons are brass knock-outs, and arms are old stove pipes.

A five-gallon metal bucket with a trash can lid rim serves as the top hat.

According to the Nelsons, the creation stands 11-12 feet tall and weighs 500-600 pounds or more.

Julie said they considered spraying it white but others assured them it would not fit in with the natural aura of the business.

The Copper Shed is located one and one-half miles east of Aulne and features custom-made crafts created with bronze and copper as well as many ceramic and other decorating items.
