Garage sales, benefit breakfast on Labor Day schedule

A benefit breakfast to honor 80 years of Florence City Library will be held during Labor Day festivities this year.

Other activities include sand volleyball, a thoughtful display honoring Kansans killed during the Vietnam War, and the traditional citywide garage sales.

The library breakfast starts at 6:30 a.m. Aug. 31 in the Florentine Senior Center. An open house is planned from 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 1. Two new computers, provided by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, will be on display.

Garage sales will be included on a map and in advertising for $5. Maps will be available Aug. 31 at local merchants. Registration deadline is Aug. 26. Forms are available from Cindy Holt at 878-4557 or the Labor Day web page, http://laborday.florenceweb.net.

A sand volleyball tournament, with amateur and skilled divisions, will be held. Trophies and other prizes will be awarded. Registration forms are at city offices in Florence, Peabody, Marion, and Hillsboro, or at the website.

"Faces on the Wall" was created by Trevor Foreman, Newton. It is regularly updated with photos and biographies of Kansans who were killed in action in Vietnam. Several Marion County residents are listed on the wall.
