Garrard dominates distance events at Marion meet

The annual Marion invitational track meet poses a special challenge for members of 1A Centre High School track teams. The meet includes 2A and 3A schools.

Centre's Justin Garrard was up to the challenge Friday and won both the 3200-meter and the 1600-meter run. He won the 1600 in a time of 4 minutes, 52.21 seconds and the 3200 in 10:27.68.

Jackie Klenda took second place in girls' pole vault at 8-0 feet.

Overall, the girls finished in ninth place and the boys in eighth.

Canton-Galva meet

Garrard, Seth Jirak, and Klenda earned first place finishes April 5 at Canton-Galva in the first track meet of the 2005 season.

The boys' team finished in second place behind Canton-Galva.

Garrard won the 3200-meter run with a time of 10 minutes, 52 seconds. He also placed first in the 1600-meter run at 5:11.

Jirak was first in shot put with a throw of 43 feet, 3 inches. He also won the discus throw at 129 feet.

A 4x800-meter relay team of Bryant Gutsch, Garrard, Tad Remy, and Dustin Burnett finished first with a time of 9:31.93.

Second-place finishers included Gutsch in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:24.70 and a 4x100 relay team of Burnett, Jeremy Kristek, Thieen Antoszyk, and Jirak, 47.67 seconds.

On the girls' team, Megan Gutsch placed second in the shot put with a throw of 30-8.

Alisha Barney and Jackie Klenda were the only two contestants in pole vault. Klenda placed first at 8-0 feet and Barney second at 6-0.

The team finished in fourth place. Wichita Independence was first, followed by Haven, Moundridge, Centre, and Canton-Galva.
