George McCallum

George Daniel "Dan" McCallum, 72, Strong City, died Oct. 13, 2006, at Via Christi Health System, St. Francis campus, Wichita.

He was born April 10, 1935, in Emporia, the son of George Alexander and Pearl (Young) McCallum.

He graduated from Kansas State University with a bachelor's degree in agronomy.

He married Donna Stephenson, and they later divorced. On July 17, 1976, he married Mary Ann Waner Horst, in Strong City.

He was a county agent for Chautauqua County, worked at the Elmdale elevator, farmed ground near Elmdale, worked for Santa Fe Railroad, was a dispatcher for Chase County, and most recently, was a jailer at the Chase County Detention Center.

Dan and his wife delivered meals and provided transportation to the senior center. He was a member of the Elmdale United Methodist Church, Cottonwood Falls Country Club, and KSU Alumni Association. He was a "sports fanatic," watching all sports on television.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Roger McCallum.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, Randy McCallum, Mahaska, and Steven McCallum, Manhattan; two daughters, Suzann Smith, Winfield, and Tamra Dietrick, Topeka; two stepsons, Mike Horst and Dan Horst, Elmdale; four stepdaughters, Gracia Winter, Wichita, Donna Clark, Bell Buckle, Tenn., Theresa Ross, Newton, and Christine Potter, Lenexa; two brothers, Richard McCallum, Bristol, Tenn., and Bruce McCallum, Manhattan; 19 grandchildren; two adopted grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was cremated.

A celebration of life memorial service was Oct. 17 at the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home, Cottonwood Falls, with the Rev. John Hasting presiding. Inurment followed in Elmdale Cemetery, Elmdale.

Memorial contributions can be made to the St. Anthony Renovation Fund in care of the funeral home.
