George Poppe
George J. Poppe, 68, of Burlington, Wash., died Feb. 28, 2005, at Mount Vernon, Wash.
Born Sept. 26, 1936, at Lincolnville, he was the son of George and Frieda (Kahns) Poppe. The family moved to Mount Vernon, Wash., when he was an infant.
He served in the U.S. Army.
In 1967, he married Charlotte South Whitinger. She died in 1997.
In 1998, he married Carol Pritchard.
He and his brother, Don "Red" Poppe, established Mount Vernon businesses, Poppe Insurance and a produce stand, The Pea Patch.
He was a member of Skagit Genealogical Society and Lions Club at Surprise, Ariz., where he spent the winter months.
He was past president of Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce and served on the Mount Vernon City Council.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Melvin and Lyle Poppe; and a grandson.
Survivors include his wife, Carol; four daughters and two sons-in-law; two brothers, Erv Poppe and Don "Red" Poppe; a sister, Geri Volkman; and 15 grandchildren.
Memorial services were held Friday at Mount Vernon, Wash., with burial in Burlington Cemetery.
