Georgie Vogel

Georgie Ann Vogel, 58, died April 21, 2003, at the HCA Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. She was born Nov. 30, 1944, in Marion, the older of two children born to George J. and Leona Fern (Higgins) Helmer.

At the age of two, Georgie's mother died. Georgie was a lifelong resident of Marion County, graduating from Marion High School with the class of 1962.

At the age of eight, she was baptized on Easter Sunday April 5, 1953, in the Marion Evangelical United Brethren Church.

On Feb. 10, 1963, Georgie was married to Garry Paul Vogel. They had two daughters, Darla Ann and Jamie Lynn. She was a devoted mother to her daughters, and a loving grandmother to her grandchildren. She always was "in touch" with her parents and her many aunts and uncles. She fulfilled the position of oldest sister with love and compassion, and always kept abreast with all the family events of nephews and nieces.

Although Georgie lived her entire life in Marion, the lives she touched encompass a large area. Her employment at Kingfisher's Inn expanded that circle of friends. She worked for Kent Richmond of the J&K Insurance Agency for more than 20 years, where she often went out of her way to help others. Georgie was a confidant of all, and a faithful and competent employee. She had worked at her present job as weigh master at Martin-Marietta Rock Quarry for more than 15 years, and always greeted the drivers by name. Georgie knew everyone, their families, and their friends. Her home was a home to everyone that knew her. Her infectious smile and laugh will be remembered by all.

Georgie was preceded in death by her mother Leona Helmer on March 24, 1947.

She leaves her father George J. Helmer and his wife Carol of Newton; two daughters, Darla Ann and husband Jeff Gore of Florence and Jamie Lynn and husband James McDonald of Wichita; three sisters, Barbara and husband Jerry Bessel of Assaria, Linda and husband Dan Stucky of Newton, and Brenda and husband Mark Buller of Newton; four grandchildren; nieces and nephews; aunts and uncles; other relatives and a host of friends.

The funeral service was held Thursday at the Eastmoor United Methodist Church in Marion. Burial followed in Marion Cemetery. The Rev. John Goering and Pastor Rick Branson officiated.

Casket bearers were Larry Boese, Gary Hood, Howard Heslet, Garry Vogel, Richard Wilson, and Jack Adams.

Music was provided by Dot Richmond, vocalist, and Burton Tidwell, organist.

Memorials may be made to the Eastmoor United Methodist Church in Marion.
