Get ready to help

Marion folks are nothing if not generous and there are several worthwhile projects to support and upcoming events that reinforce that belief.

Landon Leiker has organized a cleanup day at Marion County Park and Lake for April 14. He's asking for volunteers to come help.

Leiker has vision. He researched the lake, found out the history behind some of the amenities there, and decided to start a campaign to repair and restore.

He's gone before the county commission to ask for monetary assistance with some of the needed projects. More importantly, he knows it will take hard work and support from volunteers to get the job done. He's enthusiastic about his project and has the ability to get others excited about it. We're sure he'll succeed.

If you are one of those people searching for a cause, join Landon April 14 at Marion County Lake. Donations for the lake project can be sent to Leiker at 107 Lakeshore Drive, Marion.

If outdoor work isn't your cup of tea, there are other ways to get involved. For instance, 17-month-old Wyatt Helmer recently had a liver transplant. He is the son of Aaron and Traci Helmer. Wyatt's progress can be tracked at www.caringbridge.org/visit/wyatthelmer. A fund has been established at Tampa State Bank to help the Helmer family with expenses.

A benefit luncheon will be held April 12 for Mike and Diane Jeffrey, longtime supporters of local youth and sports events. Mike is the former owner of Mike's Service Center. He will undergo hip replacement surgery later this month and the fund-raiser will help with some of his medical expenses.

If none of these things appeal to your sense of volunteerism, attend an informational meeting Tuesday evening at Marion City Library. They are organizing a book sale and homebound delivery.

There are limitless possibilities for those who want to volunteer their time, talent, or money. For more ideas, check with Marion Chamber of Commerce and local churches and schools. Volunteering is good for the soul and good for the town.
