With the loss of sophomore sensation Allison Maddox, the Marion High School girls' basketball team was hoping their void at the guard position would go unnoticed. But Saturday afternoon at the Inman Pre-Season Tournament the St. John Tigers exploited the Warrior weakness and defeated the Marion team, 52-38.
The Warriors struggled offensively throughout the ball game, but especially in the first half. Marion scored eight points in the two quarters prior to half-time.
In the first quarter, the Tiger defense forced tough shots and several turnovers and held the Marion team to just three points. The three points the Warriors mustered in the first quarter were all from the charity stripe.
After shutting out the Warriors from the field in the first quarter, things didn't get much better in the second. However, Marion did connect on a field goal.
At intermission, Marion trailed 18-8, after holding St. John to just eight points in the second quarter.
In the third quarter, offensive output picked up for both teams. Marion scored 13 points to St. John's 17. Despite a few runs late in the fourth quarter, Marion couldn't stop the Tigers offensively.
Marion and St. John each had 17 in the final quarter.
The Warriors shot 15-for-43 from the field and were eight-for-18 from behind the free throw line.
Marion's Brandi Peterie-Shipman led all scorers with 15 points, 12 rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Amy Tajchman added eight points, four rebounds, two steals, and one assist in the losing cause.
