Girls State participants selected
Christine Schwarz may have been in Marion for nine months or more, but nevertheless, she was still the person from furthest away attending Chingawassa Days 2003, as far as anyone can tell.
Schwarz, from Erding, Bavaria, was a senior at Marion High School during the just-ended school year. An exchange student, she stayed with the Greg and Rose Davidson family in Marion.
Schwarz left for Bavaria on Monday. She will be a junior in the German system, although she had completed her senior year here. Rose Davidson explained that the German system requires a 13th year of public schooling before one graduates from high school or its equivalent.
Schwarz took part in basketball, track and forensics while here. The MHS forensics team placed fifth in the state.
She was also in the fall musical comedy at MHS, "Annie, Get Your Gun." And she helped with make-up for the school's spring play, "Cheaper by the Dozen."
She won an award at the league art contest.
"She's been really active," said Rose Davidson. She added that Schwarz was a nice girl and the family had greatly enjoyed hosting her.
Schwarz's parents and two sisters were here in May for the graduation exercises. Her father is a mechanic working on military planes, and her mother works at the courthouse, she said.
She plans to attend college back home. She and her family took a 10-day trip while they were here, seeing Las Vegas, San Francisco, and other parts of California.
