Gloves give a ritzy feeling
Last week I wrote about the old-fashioned department stores. I remember one item I liked to shop for. (Maybe they still do this in the city stores.) That was gloves. You felt so "ritzy" when you placed your right elbow on a little velvet cushion placed on the glass counter. The clerk would bring forth short or long black kid gloves, sprinkle some talcum powder inside and place one on your right hand. Then she would start gently working the glove fingers over your fingers. What an elegant feeling! I still have a pair of long black kid gloves that I have never worn.
I just finished reading "America's Women" by Collins. It is an easy read — and is the story of women when they first landed in America until present time. Women were practically slaves most of the time and after much struggle got the vote in 1920. There is a lot about black women, who still feel things are unfair. It is really a wonderful document and I advise everyone to read it.
Of course, Oprah and Martha Stewart are two examples of women who were determined to make it. Poor Martha. She's in trouble.
I had a friend one time who got her fingers in the "till." She had to go to jail. She was a lovely woman. I was fond of her. I see where a woman in Wichita had a similar problem. The judge put her on a two-year probation and she must pay back the money. Maybe that would be better. Our prisons are so full, maybe it would be better to punish people who are "white collar" criminals some other way.
What do I know? If everyone was honest we wouldn't have all this trouble.
I do hope Martha Stewart comes out OK because I like her program.
