Golf regional moves to Marion

Citing greens in poor condition, Marion High School officials announced Friday that the golf regional will move from Marion Country Club to Hillsboro Municipal Golf Course.

"Our fairways are among the best in this area, but the greens weren't going to be in the condition we need in two weeks," said Tod Gordon, MHS athletic director.

The regional is May 13. Gordon said there are bare spots on some greens where the grass has remained dormant.

MHS will remain the host school and organize the event.

Gordon said it would probably be years before the school has the chance to host another regional.

"From the activities association standpoint, we are hosting this year, so we've had our turn," he said. "There's not a formal rotation, but if there are other schools that want to host and have the facilities, they'll get that opportunity."

Gordon said Hillsboro officials were accommodating despite the late notice.

"It's important that these kids have the opportunity to play on the best course available," Gordon said. "The regional determines who advances to state, and that should be based on skill, not the conditions of the greens."
