Harold Goodwin
Harold Max Goodwin, 81, died Jan. 12, 2004, at his home in Burns.
Born Oct. 19, 1922, on his Grandma Fink's farm northeast of Burns, he was the son of Arthur Lewis and Velma Margaret (Fink) Goodwin.
His father died when Harold was four months old and he and his mother lived with his grandparents. He attended school at the Jackson and Burns schools and he worked various jobs to help pay the bills.
He was a member of the Burns United Methodist Church.
On May 15, 1942, he married Reva Ilene Riggs at Cottonwood Falls. After moving from the farm, the couple lived in El Dorado, Cottonwood Falls, and in 1950 moved to Florence.
He went to work for Skelgas in El Dorado in 1946, delivering propane for 26 years throughout Chase, Butler, and Marion counties.
The couple lived in Florence while raising their family. He was involved in various businesses including custom baling and swathing. He also owned a lime-spreading business.
He continued to be involved in farming and it was an important part of his life. In 1975, they moved to a new home on a farm west of Wonsevu and continued farming and raising livestock.
Harold's health began to fail and in 1996, they decided to sell their place in the country and build a new home in Burns. In the spring of 1997, Harold suffered a massive heart attack and continued to have health problems during the years that followed.
Harold considered Burns home and he took great pride in improvements and growth of the town. He enjoyed going downtown to visit with his many friends.
Survivors include his wife, Reva; son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Fern Goodwin of Burns; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sheryl and Gary Bartlett of Wichita, Bonnie and Monte Elms of Stephenville, Texas, and Dawna and Calvin Schmidt of Moundridge; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at Burns United Methodist Church. Officiating ministers were his niece, Janet Weathersbee of Clyde, Clint Stoppel of Ottawa, and Jim Bush of Burns.
Bennie Holtsclaw played the guitar and sang "There's a New Star Up in Heaven," "When We All Get To Heaven," and "I Saw a Man." Dolly Soyez was organist.
Casket bearers were Bob Bartlett, David Goodwin, Larry Goodwin, Dale Peterson, Matt Peterson, Scott Peterson, Randall Schmidt, and Kelly Greene.
Honorary casket bearers were Jack Woodworth, Billy Joe Williams, Glen Strotkamp, Paul Cox, John Soyez, and Royce Enns.
Burial was in Burns Cemetery.
Memorial funds have been established with the American Heart Association and Burns PRIDE Committee.
