Harold Shields

Harold Shields, 66, a retired chief warrant officer in the Army, died at his home in McPherson.

The funeral service was held Friday morning at Zeiner Funeral Home with Pastor Tom Mayse officiating.

Dot Richmond was vocalist and Shirley Bowers the organist.

Casket bearers were Christopher Shields, Joshua Shields, Brian Shields, Andrew Shields, Thomas Shields, and Bryan Smith. Honorary bearers included Troy Tucker, Jason Smith, and Wayne Gilmore.

A committal service was held at Lincolnville Cemetery where military rites were performed at graveside by an honor guard from Fort Riley.

Memorials have been established with the American Diabetes Association and American Heart Association.

The son of the late Albert and Eleanor (Smith) Shields, he was born at Antelope and grew up in the Marion community. He graduated from Marion High School where he was a star athlete.

A decorated war veteran, he was in the United States Army until he retired. His awards and decorations include the Meritorious Unit Commendation, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, two bronze campaign stars, and the Good Conduct Medal.

His hobby was wood carving and doing woodwork. He had been interested in woodworking since his high school years.

He also enjoyed traveling and camping.

He was preceded in death by his son, Casey Shields; in 1999.

Survivors include three children, Barry Shields of McPherson, Monica Farrow of Belleville, Ark., and Holly Robinson of Marion; one brother, Jim Shields of Wichita; and seven grandchildren.
