Harry Helmer
Harry J. Helmer, 82, died Jan. 14, 2003, at Oklahoma City, Okla.
The son of the late Jacob and Hannah (Eberhardt) Helmer, he was born Aug. 23, 1920, at Burstall, Canada.
A graduate of Marion High School and Wichita State University, he was a football legend in the late 1930s.
His professional career was in sales.
He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and other awards. He was patriotic, flying Old Glory daily.
On March 3, 1943, he was married to Orma Jewell at Vancouver, Wash. She died after 53 years of marriage. He also was preceded in death by his parents, sister Rachel Keazer, and brother Ben Helmer.
He was a member of the Church of Christ.
An avid sports fan, he especially enjoyed the OU Sooners.
He also enjoyed fishing, boating, and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his sons Brent and Steve Helmer, Oklahoma City, Okla.; two brothers, Dan Helmer of Tulsa, Okla., and Jack Helmer of Marion; and three grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday afternoon at Zeiner Funeral Home, Marion, with burial in Marion Cemetery. Military honors were presented at graveside.
Casket bearers were Steve Helmer, Clay Payne, Marvin Kline, Jay Helmer, John Kline, and Kendall Helmer.
