Hats off is theme of Old Settlers' Day

"Hats off to those who serve" is the parade theme for this years' Old Settlers' Day in Marion.

The theme not only pertains to those who were in military service during wartime but also to police, fire, ambulance, and volunteers who serve their community and country.

Announcement of the theme was made Monday noon by Kiwanis president Mickey Lundy. Jeannine Bateman is the parade chairman and Tom Kimbrell the OSD chairman.

Feebie Holdeman, Division 5 lieutenant governor, made a report on the state convention held over the past weekend at Fort Hays State University.

She said delegates approved a dues increase next year. National dues will increase $15 and state dues will increase $2.50 next year and another $2.50 the following year.

Marion school principals Ken Arnhold and Tod Gordon explained differences of the shift to membership in Mid-Central Athletic Association. Arnhold is president of the Cottonwood Valley League during its last year of operation. Marion has been in the CVL for many decades, he said.

The new league will be larger with two divisions. A full range of sports, academic, forensics, and music will be included in the new league for both high school and middle school students, Gordon said.

The MCA will have teams from 2A, 3A, and 4A schools. Each half division of the league will compete in football and all members of the league will play each other in basketball.

Arnold said "this year Marion will be competing in both leagues."
